Great meeting today!!!
Carson taught us about first-aid; Hayden explained the history of fencing; Madison compared dogs to wolves; Lauren shared her wonderful talent of making items from duct tape; Bella taught us about good nutrition; and Maggie spoke about the circulatory system. Next month (MARCH 3) the following students have a 2-3 minute project due: Group A: Travis, Caitlin, Amoni, Geo, and Xan Group B: Kymora, Dallas, Isaiah, Cailin, Sam, Cole, Jonathan We are recycling ink cartridges this month! Any ink cartridge brought in to recycle will count as one positive Community Service point on Class Dojo! This week we continue to study the conflict and change in Europe. Students should understand that conflict and change were dominant themes in history following WWI. Much of Europe was in chaos. Many people were hungry and homeless. Many centuries of rule by powerful and wealthy czars in Russia opened the door for a revolution. Communism seemed like a viable option for starving and powerless people, but also laid the foundation for later conflicts and land domination. The basic components of the Treaty of Versailles (such as extensive reparations and transfer of territory from Germany to other states) led to resentment and opened the door for the rise of Nazism as Hitler promised to end unemployment and poverty and bring Germany back to a state of power. Students will study the impact of the Holocaust. We will discuss how two countries which fought on the same side during WWII and were both on the winning side became bitter enemies engaged in an extremely tense time of political hostility and nuclear build-up. Students should explain how ideological differences between the United States wanting to rebuild European states with democratic governments and free-market economies as opposed to the Soviet Union wanting communist governments with centralized economic and political systems led to the Cold War. Students should explain how the United States and the Soviet Union rose to become Superpowers after WWII. MONDAY - As a review from last week, students will make an acrostic for terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Watch PPT – The Russian Revolution – slides 1 – 38 - filling in GO during discussion. HOMEWORK: Rise of Nazism/ WWII Erupts reading from Gallopade (due Wednesday)
TUESDAY- 4-H today WEDNESDAY - After checking homework, students will watch PPT- The Rise of Nazism – slides 1-15 filling out GO during discussion. Assign Slide 16. No homework.
THURSDAY - Show PPT re: Nazi Announcement to Class. Students complete protocol TAKE A STAND and move to STRONGLY AGREE OR STRONGLY DISAGREE after reading each slide. Discuss and have various students share ideas. Students write a reaction/reflection to the activity. No homework.
FRIDAY - Have various students share their reaction writing from yesterday. Show PPT The Terrible Things – Share PPT - The Rise of Nazism - WW1's Effect on Germany – (1-19) completing GO.
Our last day for Penny Wars is Monday!!!
4-H is Tuesday. The following students VOLUNTEERED to present a 2 - 3 minute project. Group A: Bella Maggie Travis Hayden Carson Group B: Isaiah Kymora Dallas Madison Lauren Students can find help about preparing demonstrations at http://www.georgia4h.org/public/coreprograms/projectachievement/ResourcesforParents/default.htm This week we continue our study of expressions with these learning targets: I can translate words into expressions. I can read expressions using appropriate mathematical terms. I can evaluate expressions using the order of operations. I can use the properties of operations to create equivalent expressions. I can identify equivalent expressions. MONDAY - Complete two cut/paste activities – reviewing exponents and matching written expressions to numerical expressions. Homework: 6.EE.2a practice
TUESDAY - Work through PPT Evaluating Expressions (slides 1 – 24). Homework: Evaluating Expressions WS Extra resources to support this lesson: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-variable-expressions-with-whole-numbers http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-variable-expressions-involving-decimals-fractions-and-mixed-numbers http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-multi-variable-expressions http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-expressions-involving-integers (enrichment) Videos http://learnzillion.com/lessons/468-evaluate-onestep-algebraic-expressions-by-substitution (one step) http://learnzillion.com/lessons/469-evaluate-multiple-step-algebraic-expressions-by-substitution (multi-step)
WEDNESDAY - This lesson is focused around the properties in mathematics. Understanding these properties and how they are used to help calculate math computational skills efficiently will help students in their future in mathematics. Some properties help with with efficiency skills, while some give meaning behind algebraic topics. Vocabulary today: Commutative Property: changing the order of numbers does not change the sum or product. Associative Property: regrouping numbers does not change the sum or product. Identity Property of Multiplication: multiplying any number by 1 leaves it unchanged. Identity Property of Addition: adding any number by 0 leaves it unchanged. Zero Property: multiplying a number by 0 is always 0. Expression: numbers and symbols grouped together that show the value of something. Equation: two equal expressions. Work through PPT The Properties of Mathematics - slides 1- 19 while students work at their seat and the board. The focus of this lesson is to have students express verbally and in writing why the equations are true or false.
THURSDAY - This lesson focuses on the Distributive Property. We will work through PPT - The Distributive Property - slides 1 - 14 while students are working at their seat and board. Extra resources to support this lesson: Tutorial: http://learnzillion.com/lessons/372-apply-the-distributive-property-using-area-models http://flash.learning.com/ahamath-demo/The-Distributive-Property-Lesson/SCORMDriver/indexAPI.html http://coolmath.com/prealgebra/06-properties/05-properties-distributive-01.htm Practice: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/distributive-property

This week we finish up with our study of Europe's environmental issues and begin looking at Europe's history. Our historical study is to provide the student with the historical background of the 20th and 21st centuries that led to the issues facing Europe today. It is not a complete history of the region. Our learning targets: I can explain how a desire for natural resources and riches, such as gold and spices, led to European exploration and colonization. I can explain how the desire to spread Christianity by missionaries led to European exploration and colonization. I can explain how a desire for trade and controlling markets led to European exploration and colonization. I can discuss the contributions of Prince Henry the Navigator. I can trace the empires of Portugal, Spain, England, and France in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Monday - no school Tuesday - Begin working on an environmental APP activity re:Europe's environmental issues. (DUE FRIDAY)
