This week we kicked off the middle school teachers'
ice bucket challenge. Each homeroom will be asked to raise one dollar per student to put their homeroom teacher into the challenge. All money collected will go to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Association. ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn't until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease. Ending the career of one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, the disease is still most closely associated with his name. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. If a homeroom doubles their pledge, the class may vote on another teacher to receive an additional ice bucket. If the class triples their amount, a third teacher may be chosen to get an extra bucket OR the class may choose to have a teacher receive MULTIPLE ice buckets! The final day to donate money will be Tuesday, September 2nd. On Wednesday, September 3rd at 12:30, the middle school students and teachers will gather outside for a community circle. At this time, the middle school teachers will accept the challenge in front of the ENTIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL. Parents, guardians, and friends are welcome to attend.

Last year, thanks to all our Brighten families, PTO raised over $27,000 at our Spirit Nights and Events we hosted throughout the year. We were able to help out with specific projects, including buying a mobile computer lab of 30 laptops. We hope to top that this year so we can help with needed big-ticket items at our at our new Prestley Mill campus. PTO board members will have membership forms available for those who have not yet signed up. For more information about BACS PTO, check out our website: bapto.weebly.com and “Like” us on Facebook Brighten Academy PTO Students have a packet in their SS binder that offers great non-fiction reading about the 5 themes and relates each theme to real-life situations and decisions. A yellow note catcher is also in their binder. Some students are working on these activities in class independently. Others have a section at a time for homework. PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S AGENDA. Those who have had it for homework THIS WEEK... This has been a crazy week. We are trying to fit the MAP testing into our schedule as much as we can so I can use the results to reorganize our classes and really get going after the long weekend. The schedule of testing can change DAILY as Mrs. Rogers and I try to maximize the computers while still offering a valid testing environment. I am hoping that all students will be finished by the end of the day Friday. Information from a rubric will be used to identify the students that qualify for the advanced curriculum. I will contact parents over the weekend if your child is being moved to the advanced 6th grade math class.
With all of that said, I have been negligent with posting on the website. I had a parent bring that to my attention today, and I apologize. I have been planning relevant lessons and analyzing data to make the best possible decisions for my students. I will do better and get everything caught up tonight! Have a safe and happy long weekend! Scholastic Market Day TODAY

In their work, geographers are guided by two questions. (1) Where are things located? and (2) Why are they there? To find the answers, geographers use five themes to organize information. As the year progresses, we will describe the regions we visit (Latin America, Europe, Australia, the United States, and Canada) in terms of these 5 themes. The 5 themes are location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. A way to remember them is to at the end of the following PPT.
Today we worked on writing ratios in words. Students have their homework in their math binder. The classwork we did in class (with the answers), the PPT we used in class, and the homework is attached below. THERE IS A MISTAKE IN THE HOMEWORK....FOR ONE OF THE PROBLEMS, MRS. JONES SHOULD HAVE 31 STUDENTS!
