This week we continue our study of expressions with these learning targets: I can translate words into expressions. I can read expressions using appropriate mathematical terms. I can evaluate expressions using the order of operations. I can use the properties of operations to create equivalent expressions. I can identify equivalent expressions. MONDAY - Complete two cut/paste activities – reviewing exponents and matching written expressions to numerical expressions. Homework: 6.EE.2a practice
TUESDAY - Work through PPT Evaluating Expressions (slides 1 – 24). Homework: Evaluating Expressions WS Extra resources to support this lesson: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-variable-expressions-with-whole-numbers http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-variable-expressions-involving-decimals-fractions-and-mixed-numbers http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-multi-variable-expressions http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/evaluate-expressions-involving-integers (enrichment) Videos http://learnzillion.com/lessons/468-evaluate-onestep-algebraic-expressions-by-substitution (one step) http://learnzillion.com/lessons/469-evaluate-multiple-step-algebraic-expressions-by-substitution (multi-step)
WEDNESDAY - This lesson is focused around the properties in mathematics. Understanding these properties and how they are used to help calculate math computational skills efficiently will help students in their future in mathematics. Some properties help with with efficiency skills, while some give meaning behind algebraic topics. Vocabulary today: Commutative Property: changing the order of numbers does not change the sum or product. Associative Property: regrouping numbers does not change the sum or product. Identity Property of Multiplication: multiplying any number by 1 leaves it unchanged. Identity Property of Addition: adding any number by 0 leaves it unchanged. Zero Property: multiplying a number by 0 is always 0. Expression: numbers and symbols grouped together that show the value of something. Equation: two equal expressions. Work through PPT The Properties of Mathematics - slides 1- 19 while students work at their seat and the board. The focus of this lesson is to have students express verbally and in writing why the equations are true or false.
THURSDAY - This lesson focuses on the Distributive Property. We will work through PPT - The Distributive Property - slides 1 - 14 while students are working at their seat and board. FRIDAY - Today students will take a quiz on their weekly learning targets.
