This week, we start Unit 3 - Rational Numbers. Our learning targets this week are: NS.5 -1. I can identify an integer and its opposite. 2. I can use integers to represent quantities in real world situations (above/below sea level,etc.). 3. I can explain where zero fits into a situation represented by integers. MONDAY - After I collect the signed and corrected math tests, we will begin to explore Integers. Students will listen to one of my all-time favorite math songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m94WTZP14SA BE CAREFUL - it's addicting! Then I will use the PPT Positive and Negative Numbers as Quantities to aide in instruction. Students will complete problems with the PPT as a class. HOMEWORK - (Due Wednesday) Integer problems to illustrate and calculate.
TUESDAY - 4-H TODAY (no formal math instruction) WEDNESDAY - First, we will take a Gallery Walk of all the homework pictures. Students will leave specific feedback for their peers. Then we will cut/paste a visual similar to slides 1 and 2 of Intro to Integers PPT to illustrate the domains of rational numbers, natural numbers, integers, etc. Then students pair up and play Integer Football. Finally, students can begin working on NS.5 task cards. HOMEWORK: Finish task cards
THURSDAY and FRIDAY - We spend these two days exploring integers. Students will cut/paste/solve integer problems into their problem solving book. We will brainstorm positive and negative words that we find in integer problems (debt, increase, lost, found, etc). Students will work with manipulatives - choosing three rational numbers and putting them in order on a number line.
THURSDAY HOMEWORK - Integers numbers foldable - write a situation that each integer could represent. FRIDAY - Quiz on NS.5
