This week we kicked off the middle school teachers' ice bucket challenge.
Each homeroom will be asked to raise one dollar per student to put their homeroom teacher into the challenge. All money collected will go to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Association. ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn't until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease. Ending the career of one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, the disease is still most closely associated with his name. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. If a homeroom doubles their pledge, the class may vote on another teacher to receive an additional ice bucket. If the class triples their amount, a third teacher may be chosen to get an extra bucket OR the class may choose to have a teacher receive MULTIPLE ice buckets! The final day to donate money will be Tuesday, September 2nd. On Wednesday, September 3rd at 12:30, the middle school students and teachers will gather outside for a community circle. At this time, the middle school teachers will accept the challenge in front of the ENTIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL. Parents, guardians, and friends are welcome to attend. Comments are closed.
