You might want to discuss this common theme between these books. Marley is doomed to walk the Earth burdened by the weight of his sins and crimes. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss how this is similar or different from your beliefs and the beliefs of your faith. Poverty and our responsibility to others is a huge part of the story. In Dickens' time, people often went to debtor’s prison. In fact, Dickens' father spent time in debtor’s prison. You might want to talk about how things have changed. For many Americans, this is a “hot” political topic. Once again, we see the strength of family and friends as an important part of the story. You might want to discuss Scrooge’s treatment of his family and by his family. You might also want to discuss the strength and love demonstrated by Tiny Tim’s family.
