This week we kicked off the middle school teachers' ice bucket challenge.
Each homeroom will be asked to raise one dollar per student to put their homeroom teacher into the challenge. All money collected will go to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Association. ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn't until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease. Ending the career of one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, the disease is still most closely associated with his name. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. If a homeroom doubles their pledge, the class may vote on another teacher to receive an additional ice bucket. If the class triples their amount, a third teacher may be chosen to get an extra bucket OR the class may choose to have a teacher receive MULTIPLE ice buckets! The final day to donate money will be Tuesday, September 2nd. On Wednesday, September 3rd at 12:30, the middle school students and teachers will gather outside for a community circle. At this time, the middle school teachers will accept the challenge in front of the ENTIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL. Parents, guardians, and friends are welcome to attend. We are in need of some grass cutting, edging, and trimming at the Prestley Mill location.
Double credit will be offered. If you can help out this Saturday, August 30th at 8:00 a.m. please come to the Prestley Mill location. Please bring any equipment needed. Thank you! PLEASE SEND IN WITH YOUR STUDENT!!!

PTO will have Buffalo Wild Wings giveaways-- attendees can drop off tickets and the winners will be drawn from all attendees the following morning at school. You do not need to be present to win. Last year, thanks to all our Brighten families, PTO raised over $27,000 at our Spirit Nights and Events we hosted throughout the year. We were able to help out with specific projects, including buying a mobile computer lab of 30 laptops. We hope to top that this year so we can help with needed big-ticket items at our at our new Prestley Mill campus. PTO board members will have membership forms available for those who have not yet signed up. We have finished our first week of Physical Education class. I have enjoyed getting to know your children and after this week I am very excited about all we can accomplish in PE class this year. This has been a week for introductions, for rules, for routines, and for some small games. Next week we will start to ease into dressing out in all Physical Education classes. Your student will need the following: · Navy Blue Shorts (no shorter than 2 inches above knee) or Navy Blue Athletic Pants. · Gray T-shirt (Plain-No graphics or writing). Students may also wear Brighten Spirit Day T-shirts if they have one. · Tennis Shoes (they must abide by the same dress code as in their other classes- shoes must be predominately white, navy blue, black, gray, or brown). Once students have a good understanding of dressing out, I will start giving them a daily grade for dressing out. This will make up part of their overall grade. The rest of the students’ grade will be composed of daily participation, paper quizzes and assignments, and skill development. Equipment: We are working towards getting new equipment for the PE Program. We currently don’t have much to use at the new gym. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. We are still in need of Basketballs, Frisbees, Soccer Balls, Footballs, Hula Hoops, etc. Thank you all for the support you have given us already not only with donating equipment but also for making me feel so welcome. I am truly blessed to be a part of the Brighten Family and am very excited about this year. Please email me with any concerns or questions. Sincerely, Coach Kiker [email protected] Media Center Fundraiser!!!!
