The statistics unit began with an introduction to statistical questions. From there, the mean and median are introduced as measures of center that can be used to summarize a set of data gathered in response to a statistical question. Spread is introduced as a measure to describe the variability of a set of data gathered in response to a statistical question. By the end of the unit, students should recognize the differences between measures of center and measures of variation and also what they are useful for despite the fact that both are used to describe data sets. The overarching goal is for students to see that the data collected in response to a statistical question have certain attributes (center, spread, overall shape). This week's PPTs:
