It’s that time again—Brighten Academy will give the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests for all 3rd-8th graders in April. We are in need of many volunteers to proctor for the tests. Please look at the dates and times below to see if you can help us by proctoring.
Each volunteer must attend ONE proctor training session, either Monday, March 31st at 5:00 p.m., OR Tuesday, April 1st at 10:00 a.m., OR Wednesday, April 2nd at 7:00 a.m. The training sessions will last approximately one hour. All volunteers will receive volunteer credit, so sign up now and help us out! The dates for the tests are:
We are still in need of many more volunteers. Please check your calendar and see if you can help on one or more of the following MORNINGS. We have enough volunteers (thanks!) to cover the afternoon sessions. If you would like to volunteer please email Connie Arnold at[email protected] with the following information:
Thanks in advance—your help is crucial and very much appreciated!

I can substitute specific values for variables. Example: Evaluate 5(n + 3) – 7n, when n=1/2 I can evaluate algebraic expressions including those that arise from real-world problems. Examples: · Use the formulas V = s3 and A = 6 s2 to find the volume · The perimeter of a parallelogram is found using the formula p=2l + 2w . What is the perimeter of a rectangular picture frame with dimensions of 8.5 inches by 11 inches? and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2. I can apply the order of operations to evaluate expressions. Example: P Parentheses first E Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) MD Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) AS Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) I can apply properties of operations to write equivalent expressions. Examples: · The Commutative Property - Changing the order of the values you are adding or multiplying does not change the sum or product. 6 + 4 = 4 + 6 a • b = b • a · The Associative Property - Changing the grouping of the values you are adding or multiplying does not change the sum or product. (2 + 7) + 3 = 2 + (7 + 3) (ab)c = a(bc) · The Identity Property – The sum of any number and zero is the original number (additive identity). The product of any number and 1 is the original number (multiplicative identity) · The Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition and Subtraction 9(4 + 5) = 9(4) + 9(5) a(b + c) = ab + ac 5(8-2) = 5(8) – 5(2) a(b – c) = ab – ac As the week progresses, we will use the following resources:
The following is a compilation of review resources for your child. Also, the social studies Europe binder should be a great resource! The test will be multiple choice, fill-in-the blank, matching, and essay. We will review a different section each day: Monday - Review Historical Understandings -making historical happenings flash cards in class -20 multiple choice review questions for homework Historical Understandings SS6H6 The student will analyze the impact of European exploration and colonization on various world regions. I can identify the causes of European exploration and colonization; include religion, natural resources, a market for goods, and the contributions of Prince Henry the Navigator. I can trace the empires of Portugal, Spain, England, and France in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. I can trace the colonization of Australia by the United Kingdom. I can explain the impact of European empire building in Africa and Asia on the outbreak of WWI. SS6H7 The student will explain conflict and change in Europe to the 21st century. Friday – Europe Unit Test
Please take a moment to read the attached bulletin. It contains some important updates about our new facility, a new procedure for entrance into the building, and many overdue thank yous.
This week we are concentrating on the following standards: 6.EE.2a.2b.2c. I CAN translate written phrases into algebraic expressions. I CAN identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient). I CAN substitute specific values for variables. On Monday, we praticed writing both algebraic and written phrases.
On Tuesday we will explore algebraic vocabulary with the following PPT and make a flip booklet of our words.
As the week progresses, we will complete a variable and expressions activity around Theme Parks! Have a GREAT WEEK!
This week, we will discuss trade barriers, the economy of Europe, the rise of Nazism and the Russian Revolution. Today we explored trade barriers. The students completed a graphic organizer while watching the following PPT. Then the rest of their pamphlet is to be completed by Wednesday.
As the week goes on, we will explore the rise of Nazism (review from our field trip last week) with the following PPT and graphic organizer.
The week finishes out with a look at the Russian Revolution.
This covers all subjects! This was updated by the state on Sept. 2013. THANKS! If there are new updates, I will pass them along.
